History

So far, Rose has provided two contradictory versions of her past (see References, below). There is some truth in the story she gave Chelsea, but not much.

Rose was born just outside of Haven in 1952. In 1970, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a singing career. As “Rose Thorn”, she did cut one song that made it to the top 100: Dusty Springfield’s “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me”. It was actually a demo that she had made that one producer liked. The record company released the single in the spring of 1972, but decided not to sign Rose for a full contract. Shortly after that, Rose met someone named Morana.

Rose was a lesbian before being changed, so she was attracted to the Slavic beauty. Little did Rose know that Morana was a vampire, turned by Dracula himself. Rose was changed in 1972, and disappeared completely from the music scene. She became Morana’s lover and stayed with her for fourteen years. Rose became proficient with the Tepes dark magick, but there was something about her that never truly Turned. For a Tepes-vampire she still had a lot of humanity in her. This made for turmoil, both within Rose herself and her relationship with Morana. They had a falling out when Morana sired a male concubine to be her companion. So in 1986, Rose left the west coast and traveled the world having affairs and changing lives.

Then in the year 2000 she heard of a very powerful witch who destroyed the great Deus Lupus. She heard by accident that this witch lived in Haven, Rose’s hometown. To her this was an omen. She studied Chelsea through her contacts, getting to know everything about her and, eventually, falling in love. Now Rose is coming home to take a lover. (She was not aware that Gustov had influences her to come to this decision.)

Rose turned Wald into a vampire in late 2001, just before arriving in Haven in early 2002. She managed to catch up to Chelsea after Anna’s funeral. Rose bought Chelsea coffee and a sandwich to help cheer her up. While in the coffee shop, Rose tried to pick up Chelsea. However, Rose came on too strongly and Chelsea fled in confusion. Meanwhile, knowing that Chelsea was already attached to Jubal, she had Wald gather some of Jubal’s blood and hair so that she could cast a spell of separation between them. (As a Tepes-vampire, she can easily cast spells with negative intent.) The spell affected Jubal powerfully, making him hate Chelsea. It seems to have had little effect on Chelsea herself; she was dismayed by Jubal’s change.

Just about then, Gustov appeared and informed Rose that Morana wanted the Dark Sun Necklace back. This was simply a distraction for Rose, while the wizard made sure that his influencing of her actions would lead to the proper conclusion, the vampire covenant.

Rose was unsatisfied with Chelsea’s reaction to her. To release the inhibitions she felt were preventing Chelsea from loving her, Rose instigated the vampire covenant on her. (This too was part of Morana and Gustov’s plan.) That got them together, but it also released Chelsea’s darkness.

In New Orleans, Chelsea decided she wanted a particular house. She forced Rose to accompany her as she forced her way in with the intention of claiming it by force. However, because the owner of the house, a woman, had a daughter that reminded Chelsea so strongly of Anna Crenshaw, Chelsea came to her senses and fled.

Rose quickly caught up to her. Unfortunately, so did Morana and her wizard-allay Gustov. Morana declared that Chelsea was too dangerous to live and Gustav cast a spell on her, trying to make Chelsea commit suicide. The spell failed in the end, and Chelsea turned on her attackers, destroying the vampires. (Gustav escaped to fight another day.) Rose was hurt in the fight. She confessed to Chelsea that she had killed Anna Crenshaw. Rose knew that Chelsea would leave her and Rose didn’t want to die, but she also didn’t want to live without Chelsea. In the end, the rising sun destroyed Rose as Chelsea embraced her one last time, ashes scattering in the wind.

Personality

Rose is a curious combination of ruthlessness and vulnerability. She doesn’t let her feelings stand in the way of doing what she thinks she must.

She seems to be a Tepes-vampire that never truly Turned all the way. Somehow, she returned part of her essential humanity and compassion.
