Wald apparently grew up somewhere in New Jersey, though he has lived in Haven since 1991. In Septempber, 2001, he returned to New Jersey for his brother’s funeral. (No he didn’t die in the terrorist attack; he was a drunk driver.) At that time, he met Rose, a Tepes-vampire, who turned him into a vampire as well. Being a somewhat typical Tepes-vampire, she turned him loose without any nurturing, only telling him “Never make a mess.” Not sure what to do, Wald stayed away from Haven for months, long enough for his friend Jubal to be worried.
Eventually, though, shortly before Christmas, Wald returned to Haven, contacting Jubal first. Wald revealed that he had been turned into a Tepes-Vampire. Since Jubal wasn’t willing to let his friend wander the town killing people, Wald attacked him, but lost his nerve at the last moment. Jubal offered his own blood to Wald to sustain him for a while and promised to talk to Elemental-Wizard Jacob Livingston to see if there was anything else that could be done. Jacob did manage to acquire a recipe for pig blood cocktails from a vampire of his acquaintance; these seem to be able to sustain Wald adequately.
In March of 2002, Wald was the first one to discover the body of Anna Crenshaw in the woods. He fled to find Chelsea, whom he felt could help with the situation, but she and Jubal had had a spat, which left Jubal mauled and in need of medical attention. Wald managed to bring Jubal to Jacob, who had some equipment to deal with the situation, keeping Jubal out of the hospital and avoiding troublesome questions. Jacob told Wald to contact the sheriff about Anna. They investigated and confirmed the death. Wald was interrogated by the FBI about it, but only admitted to a dark figure looming over her.
Meanwhile Rose showed up in Haven, where she met Chelsea. Rose bought Chelsea a cup of coffee and came on a little strong causing Chelsea to flee. Almost immediately, Wald came up to Rose and presented her with some blond hair and a vial of blood, apparently from Jubal. Wald was compelled to obey his sire vampire, but he didn’t want to participate in the spell Rose was going to cast.
Wald stayed in the background as Rose attempted to win Chelsea as her lover through the vampire covenant. He even followed them to New Orleans. After Chelsea had recovered from her attack of darkness, Wald revealed his presence to Chelsea. He decided to stay in New Orleans; Chelsea thought that was a good idea.
Wald has had a rotten life and is a typical ne’er-do-well. On the outside Wald is a jerk. He’s pretty much one on the inside too. He does have loyalty going for him. He wouldn’t desert his “loser” friends in a crisis. Wald’s bitter outlook on life stems from his somewhat homely appearance. So, instead of bestowing love upon others he verbally yanks their hearts out. At least that’s his answer to the quandary of his disposition. Oddly enough he seems to be happier and have purpose in his new unlife as a vampire.
