Origin
Near the beginning of time when magick was just forming it was realised
that eventually this magick would find its way to living organisms and perhaps
intelligent ones at that.
Several billion years later, this very thing happened.
Life sprung up all over the universe and some of these life forms
were born from the magick itself.
These were very special indeed and so it was decided
that some of them needed guidance and companionship.
Each needed, in fact, a familiar.
But what would this familiar be?
The turtles of earth were wise, sturdy and long lasting, but not particularly attractive.
Plus they were very slow.
No, the familiar needed would have to be wise and friendly, but still objective.
It would have to have a keen sense of independence and a need for love.
The only animal that fit that job description would not evolve for tens of thousands of years,
but it had to be that animal.
And so it was decided to borrow that animal from another time
and delivered it to the beginning of magick on earth.
Seven cats were brought back from the twentieth century.
These cats, kittens at the time, had been wrapped in a cloth
and thrown out of a speeding car into a deep river.
They were brought back and “reborn”, so to speak, through the magick.
Now they are known simply as The Cats,
for that is what they are in their hearts and souls.
The Cats have differently coloured coats
and extremely different personalities.
Each also possesses special magickal powers themselves,
including a secret power that only it knows.
The Cats are all brothers and sisters.
They cannot procreate with other “normal” cats,
though they may try.
They were then sent to live with a particular magick user or morph
who excelled in magic.
They would guide these gifted souls and their kin,
sometimes staying with a single family for hundreds of generations.
Sebastian has been with the Chattans for over five hundred years.
They appear to take orders from some higher authority,
which Eon has, possibly irreverently, called “Big Mama”,
and Sebastian has refered to as “the Mother”.
Who this actually refers to is not known,
though there is rampant speculation.
Orders from the Mother are sufficiently authoritative
to stop Sebastian from investigating as he pleases.
