Unicorns are one-horned magickal land animals. They used to reside on Earth, but now only live in other coexisting dimensions where they fled after the Portal Wars (qv). Legend seems to tell first of caprine or goat-like unicorns beginning in the Middle Ages. Later, the more equine or horse-like unicorn was prevalent. This may indicate two different species or populations of unicorns. Or it may be a merely indicate a shift in perception of the the observers. It could also show a real change in the population of unicorns as they left Earth for other realms.
A unicorn horn is purported to have great powers for detecting and neutralising poisons of all kinds. In fact, a complete unicorn horn is one of the artefacts in the Council Vault. According to legend, only a virgin can approach a unicorn safely (whether this applies to the CotC universe is unknown).
Something called unicorn powder can be used to anchor a soul after physical death before a Resurrection spell is cast. What this powder actually is has not been made clear.
