Magick

What is Magick?

Magick is the energy produced from all the elements in the universe. Whether the element is earth, fire, air, water, plant, animal, or spirit, they all produce magickal energy of some kind. Magickal creatures are more sensitive to this magickal energy and therefore have a greater connection to it. Note that living beings have their own store of magick within them.

[The Council Chambers] Magick exists as a constant throughout the universe, the one exception being the Chambers of the Council of Three. Here is the point where magick was born, the point of origin for the Big Bang. Magick exists here in a more powerful form, but everywhere else it is at a constant level.

Magick exists as waves rather than particles. Think of magick as the waves of light. Unlike light, however, magick comes from all things including space and time itself. Light comes from a singular point and goes out such as a star or a galaxy. How much magick is there in the universe? Imagine this universe completely filled with stars, with the largest one being in the middle, and all emitting light at the same time. This means that the most powerful spells conceived can be cast at any point in the universe in infinite succession if the caster is powerful enough to take in that amount of magick. There is yet no being capable of doing this, except magick itself. This also means that magick in its original form is a pure raw material. It is neither good nor evil. It simply is.

Magick can be influenced by the way it is used. The more positive energy a practitioner sends out, the more positive energy he shall receive. The opposite of course is also true. The more negative energy he sends out, the more negative energy comes back. (There is a related concept known as the Three-Fold Law: anything negative that you do will backlash three times worse. It is uncertain if the Three-Fold Law applies to positive energy as well.) The energy is defined as magickal energy as in spells, charms, curses, and similar, as well as human emotions, actions, and events. While good and evil are relative to how a society views these concepts, the energy formed by these concepts through emotion, actions, or events is constant.

The more one uses magick, the more powerful one can become in magick. This is why normal humans can, through constant study and effort, become Craftsmen Wizards. The same applies to magickal beings: the more they use their magick the more powerful they become.

Using Magick

All humans possess some ability of magick, the normal connection to magick. This is true regardless of how determinedly mundane a person wishes to be. Those who want to use it simply choose to believe in it. Some humans are “born-witches” with a direct connection to magick allowing them to perform difficult spells more easily. Both magickal ability itself and the strength of that ability are determined by heredity. A born-witch who never studies the Craft is indistinguishable from a more mundane human, but still can pass on magickal potential to his or her offspring.

[Timon casting spell] Most users of magick in whatever form must invoke spells, rituals, charms, or talismans to accomplish the effects desired. These external actions and objects are supposed to mirror an internal reality that controls and shapes the magickal energy. Someone with very strong connections to magick can accomplish some effects simply by willing it to be so.

A practitioner’s skill depends on many factors:

See Practitioners for more information.

Generally a morph’s magickal ability is completely tied up in the ability to transform. Some morphs, however, exert the effort to study the Craft as practitioners. This has the added benefit of making the morph’s transformations less taxing in personal energy.

See Morphs and the Craft for complete information.

[Rose casting spell] Each Demon-Vampire has its own specific magickal abilities.

Lilith-Vampires are able to take up the Craft and become practitioners. The bloodlust of a vampire interferes with its ability to focus, so it it is rare to find a vampire-practitioner of great power.

Tepes-Vampires can undertake major workings, but only for negative purposes. They do not generally develop as practitioners; they simply have the power to perform spells due to the dark magick inherited from their sire, Dracula.

Nosferatu appear to lack enough mental capacity to perform any sort of magick.

See Vampires and the Craft for complete information.

When all is said and done, magick can affect weather, direct individual actions, alter personal emotions, allow travel over cosmic distances or across the street, create personal retreats, and invoke itself as judge and jury over crimes against nature.

Other Notes

Waldemar Hercules Timon considers magick to be a being or at least considers that one should talk with it and perhaps ask how it is doing, rather than merely using it for one’s own needs.

[Spell effect] Magick itself can inflict curses upon certain people or families for certain heinous crimes. There is no practitioner involved, nor any demon or other being; nature and magick itself set the curse. (See the Curse of Mór Sine, Vlad Dracula Tepes for examples.)

Some physical objects are inherently magickal (unicorn horn), others gain symbolic magickal power (lotus flowers presented by the Buddha), and still others are imbued with magick for a variety of effects (Excalibur, crystal ball). A listing of various artefacts so far encountered, including some of the contents of the Council Vault, is at Artefacts.
